A training programme with a rich surgical heritage and a progressive vision of the future of Trauma & Orthopaedics surgery.

Our training programme boasts a deep history in orthopaedic excellence and innovation at the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, Shropshire. Since its founding by Dame Agnes Hunt and Sir Robert Jones in the 1900s, the hospital has developed into a world-renowned centre for orthopaedic care, training and research. Today, it continues to attract aspiring orthopaedic surgeons from around the world and is the centre for one of the most successful training programmes in the United Kingdom.

Early-year trainees (ST3/4) usually start in one of the peripheral district general hospitals (Hereford, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wrexham or Bangor) for general trauma experience. Major trauma exposure is provided at our major trauma centre in Stoke-on-Trent. Peri-exam years are spent at Oswestry, where trainees get coached by consultants when preparing for the FRCS.

Teaching programme

We are very fortunate to have dedicated consultants who invest time and effort into our training programme. Our formal teaching programme consists of:

  • Weekly regional registrar core teaching sessions
  • Basic sciences and surgical approaches teaching
  • Bi-annual mock clinical and written exams
  • Practical workshops (e.g. anatomy cadaveric labs, sawbone workshops, simulation sessions, NOTSS courses)
  • Annual Registrar Research Day

Orthopaedic Institute

The Orthopaedic Institute Limited, founded in 1971, is a registered national charity and through voluntary contributions, helps fund research in the specialist departments within the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. It also funds and organises training courses for orthopaedic trainees and allied health professionals.
